BAZ FOSTER MARQUETRY
Baz has been a professional artist for over 20 years, working in many mediums. It was when living in Tasmania that he discovered marquetry, and the appeal was instantaneous. The unlimited variety of colours, textures and figures in Australian timbers enabled Baz to create effects in his work, which were simply unobtainable using traditional methods of painting such as oils, acrylics etc. He now uses a knife to create his unique work instead of a brush.
Baz is an Atherton Tablelands artist. He lives in the beautiful village of Yungaburra which is situated at the top of the Gilles Range approx. 40 kms from Cairns. Yungaburra can also be reached via Kuranda which is a pleasant 1 hours drive through some of the most beautiful tropical Savanna and Rainforest scenery in Far North Queensland, or south of Cairns via the spectacular Gillies Highway.The rainforest around Yungaburra is where Baz draws a lot of his inspiration for his unique form of artwork.
Using totally traditional knife cutting techniques, and making extensive drawings of his subjects, he then concentrates on the process of bringing together the various elements of bird and leaf designs, which is a Baz Foster marquetry hallmark.
As a medium marquetry is one of the most challenging and rewarding art forms that Baz has Worked in. By definition there isn't any paint used in marquetry. The colours of the birds are created by using dyed timber, which are then toned down by dipping the individual pieces of timber into hot sand (sand shading). Although, producing work of varied subject matter, he now creates pictures depicting exclusively Australian birds. With the use of dramatic backgrounds, he can create pictures which are truly outstanding. Seeing is believing.
Because of the large demand for Baz’s original work, you will not find the original pictures available in any other art galleries around Australia, they are sold exclusively from his own studio. Baz is always pleased to meet visitors to his studio
